How to Manage Food Allergies in Children and Adults

Food allergies are a growing concern, affecting millions of children and adults. Managing food allergies is crucial for maintaining health and quality of life, whether it’s a mild reaction or a severe, life-threatening condition. Food allergies range from common allergens like peanuts and milk to more uncommon ones like shellfish or soy. While the reactions can vary from person to person, understanding how to manage and prevent allergic reactions is essential.

Understanding and Managing Food Allergies

Food allergies occur when the immune system mistakenly identifies a harmless food protein as a harmful substance. In response, the body produces antibodies to fight off the “threat,” triggering a series of reactions. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, involving the skin, gastrointestinal, respiratory, and cardiovascular systems. In the most extreme cases, a food allergy can cause anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction that requires immediate medical attention.

Common food allergies include:

  • Peanuts
  • Tree nuts
  • Eggs
  • Milk
  • Wheat
  • Soy
  • Fish
  • Shellfish

Although these are the most common allergens, it’s important to remember that virtually any food can cause food allergies.

Allergic reactions can vary in severity but can include:

  • Hives
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Wheezing or shortness of breath
  • Anaphylaxis

Allergens must be diagnosed and avoided in both children and adults. If a reaction occurs, it’s important to have a plan and know the next steps. Work with your or your child’s doctor to create an action plan and decide when to administer medication. In some cases, an EpiPen may be needed. After any reaction, follow up with a doctor to assess the severity and discuss the next steps in allergy management.
