Allergy Testing: What to Expect and How It Works

When you’re dealing with allergies, it’s important to have an understanding of what could trigger an allergic reaction. Allergy testing is a valuable tool for identifying specific allergens that trigger allergic reactions in individuals. Understanding the process and purpose of allergy testing can help you learn to manage your allergies more effectively. Before undergoing allergy testing, you should know what to expect from the process and how to prepare.

Testing for Allergies

Allergy testing is typically done through a skin prick test. This common allergy test involves placing a small amount of allergen extract on the skin (usually the forearm or back) and then pricking or scratching the skin’s surface. A small, raised bump (hive) will appear within 15-20 minutes if you are allergic to the substance. During this test, a grid is drawn on your skin so your allergist can track each trigger and how your body responds to it.

Another form of allergy testing is a blood test. A blood test, also known as a radioallergosorbent test (RAST), measures the presence of specific antibodies (IgE) in the blood that react to allergens. Blood tests are useful for individuals who cannot undergo skin prick tests or for identifying allergens that are not easily testable through skin testing.

Before undergoing allergy testing, you will typically consult your allergist to discuss your symptoms, medical history, and potential triggers. Some medications, such as antihistamines, may interfere with allergy test results. Your allergist may advise you to stop taking certain medications for a period before testing.

Your allergist will develop a personalized allergy management plan based on the allergy testing results. This may include avoidance strategies, medication options, and allergen immunotherapy for long-term relief.
