Allergy Shot

Allergy Shots

Allergy shots or allergen immunotherapy is a form of treatment prescribed for patients with allergic rhinitis (hay fever) or allergic asthma. It helps to increase tolerance to allergens to which a person is allergic. It is a good option for patients who have persistent allergies or who do not respond well to medications. Immunotherapy can relieve allergy symptoms and help reduce the frequency of reactions.

Allergy shots involve receiving regularly scheduled injections of purified extract of allergens to which a person is allergic. The allergen extract is injected into the arm once or twice a week in increasingly larger amounts. When the maintenance dose is reached, the quantity will remain stable and the frequency of shots will be increased to every two to four weeks.  It is generally recommended that shots be continued for a period of three to five years.
